Look for practices that provide a written treatment plan setting out each stage of care and its cost, so you can make a properly informed decision rather than being surprised at the end.
If you ask about pricing and get a vague answer, or a fee that doesn't clearly explain what's included, that's worth noting. Transparency here isn't a minor administrative detail — it directly affects how much you can trust the rest of the relationship.
Dental anxiety is genuinely common, and how a practice responds to it says a great deal about the culture of the place. Some signs to look for: staff who ask about anxiety before assuming, dentists who explain each stage of a procedure as it happens rather than working in silence, and a general pace that doesn't feel rushed.
Patient reviews are one of the more reliable ways to gauge this before you ever walk through the door. Comments that specifically mention feeling "put at ease," "listened to," or having things "explained clearly" are a stronger signal than a generic star rating on its own — they tell you something about how the practice actually behaves with someone who's nervous, not just whether people were satisfied with the outcome.
This is easy to overlook when you're not in pain, but worth checking before you need it rather than during a crisis. Ask what a practice's process looks like if you call with sudden pain, a knocked-out tooth, or a broken restoration — whether existing patients get priority for same-day appointments, and how quickly you could realistically be seen.

Even if you only need routine check-ups today, it's worth choosing a practice that can support you if your needs change — cosmetic treatment, restorative work, or something more involved like implants. Moving practices partway through a course of treatment, or because your original dentist doesn't offer something you now need, adds friction and breaks the continuity described above.
A quick look at a practice's treatments page will tell you whether they cover general, cosmetic and restorative dentistry, or whether you'd need to be referred elsewhere for anything beyond routine care.
Location matters, but the specifics matter more than the general area. Is there parking, and is it free? Which bus routes serve the practice if you don't drive? What are the opening hours, and do they accommodate a working schedule without needing time off for every appointment?
These feel like minor details until a practice is inconvenient enough that you start putting off visits — at which point the "closest" or "easiest" dentist stops being either.
Star ratings alone don't tell you much — most established practices sit somewhere between 4 and 5 stars. What's more useful is reading a handful of the actual reviews and looking for specific, recurring themes rather than generic praise. Do multiple reviews mention the same staff member by name? Do they describe a particular experience — a nervous first visit, a child's appointment, an emergency — in enough detail to feel genuine? Patterns across several reviews are far more informative than any single five-star rating.

However thorough your research, the clearest signal is often your own first visit. Did the dentist explain things in a way you understood? Did you feel like your questions were genuinely answered, or brushed past? Was the treatment plan clear before you left?
